Squirting Cucumber Or Exploding Cucumber Seeds (Ecballium elaterium)

Price for Package of 5 or 10 seeds.

Squirting cucumber (Ecballium elaterium), trailing herbaceous plant in the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). The plant is native to the Mediterranean region but has been introduced to other areas as a garden curiosity for its distinctive explosive fruits. Squirting cucumber contains poisonous cucurbitacins, and all parts of the plant can be fatal if ingested.

The hairy, rough, thick-stemmed plant may spread out to about 60 cm (about 24 inches) and has yellow bell-shaped flowers. The long-stalked bluish green fruits are about 4–5 cm (1.6–2 inches) long. Upon reaching maturity, the fruits explosively eject their brown seeds as they detach from the stem; the seeds may travel 3 to 6 metres (about 10 to 20 feet) from the plant.

Before we delve into the plant’s historical usage, let’s be clear that squirting cucumber contains high levels of cucurbitacins, which can be fatal if ingested. That said, the bitter cucurbitacin was cultivated in England and Malta into the nineteenth century to control worms. It has been used as a medicinal plant for over 2,000 years with explosive effects upon the human body worthy of its name. Apparently, the more benign effects treat rheumatism, paralysis, and cardiac disease. The root is said to be an analgesic and topically squirting cucumber was used to treat shingles, sinusitis, and painful joints. However, the more volatile effects are purgative and abortive. Large doses have caused gastro enteritis and death. At any rate, modern herbalists do not utilize squirting cucumber at this juncture nor should you.

Disclaimer: The contents of this article is for educational and gardening purposes only. It gets its unusual name from the fact that, when ripe, it squirts a stream of mucilaginous liquid containing its seeds, which can be seen with the naked eye. It is thus considered to have rapid plant movement.

It is native to Europe, northern Africa, and temperate areas of Asia. It is grown as an ornamental plant elsewhere, and in some places it has naturalized.

It is suspected to provide food for the caterpillars of the tortrix moth Phtheochroa rugosana.

This plant, and especially its fruit, is poisonous, containing cucurbitacins. In the ancient world it was considered to be an abortifacient.

Elaterium or elaterin is the name of the greenish substance extracted from the juice of the fruit that is used as a purgative.

As the cucumber matures, the skin becomes a darker yellow and the green patches become smaller. It has a pale yellow to white flesh with small, yellowish edible seeds. Dosakai has a tangy taste, unlike most members of the Cucurbit family where bitterness is the norm; it is sweet and flavorful.

Current Facts

The small yellow cucumber, Dosakai is botanically known as Cucumis sativus and is a relative of the common cucumber. Unlike common cucumbers and other Cucurbits, Dosakai doesn’t contain the chemical compound that gives most fruit in this family a bitter taste.

Applications

Dosakai is commonly used in Indian Sambar (soup) or Dal referred to as Dosakaya pappu. It is also the key ingredient in Dosakaya pachadi, a chutney made with the yellow cucumber. Dosakai is used to make a delicacy from the state of Andhra Pradesh in southeastern India called Dosa Avakai, which is a pickled dish. The pickling process is quick, and the dish is ready in 24 hours, unlike the traditional Mango pickle of the same region of India which takes a week. Dosakai stores very well after pickling.

Geography/History

Dosakai is native to India and the immediate surrounding regions. It is prevalent in southeastern India in Andhra Pradesh, both in gardens and in the kitchen. Dosakai prefers a growing climate with short summers.

African Horned Cucumber seeds (Cucumis zambianus)

Price for Package of 3 seeds.

Cucumis zambianus (Cucurbitaceae), a New Species from Northwestern Zambia.

Horned Cucumber, Jelly Melon, Kiwano Annual vining vegetable native to NW Zambia where it is cultivated by indigenous farmers. The young fruits are mottled green and are wholly edible, tasting like cucumber. The mature fruits are hard of shell, green and yellow striped, a scoopable source of nutritious seeds and life-giving water. Speaking to the "water" aspect of this, there are several advantages to considering "growing your own drinking water" in this manner. I often get thirsty in the garden, and find that eating a cucumber assuages thirst and keeps me going. The African cucumber is particularly nice for this, as the inside stays watery and pleasant tasting regardless of stage of ripeness (outer shell does not get rubbery). When I "drink" the insides of the horned cucumber, and chew up the seeds, my body feels just as balanced as if I'd drunk a can of raw coconut water, and my pocketbook says thank you, and the earth says thank you for not using an aluminum can! Having trouble finding clean drinking water? Cycle the water source through the plants in your garden, and they will clean it up, and fix pure water in their tissues for you to use. This may sound farfetched, but in areas where amoebic dysentary is prevalent, it can be lifesaving to peel and eat your water instead of drinking it from a glass! These kinds of precautions are relevant in certain parts of the world, and may well become more relevant into the foggy future. Lets be prepared! Cultivation: Standard garden culture for cucumbers. Start indoors just prior to last frost or direct seed. We started our's on May 17 in the greenhouse. Germination was efficient and rapid. We transplanted to the garden to 2 foot centers on June 1 and were eating cucumbers by July 1st. These were way faster to mature than "marketmore." The mature vines lasted throughout the summer and proved to be an effective weed barrier--they suppress the weeds between the beds.

Cucumis zambianus is a relatively new species, first officially described in 2008.

Fruit are about the size of grapes and taste like cucumbers with a tinge of sourness. Vernacular names include mouse melon, Mexican sour gherkin, cucamelon, Mexican miniature watermelon and Mexican sour cucumber.

This plant is native to Mexico and Central America, where it is called sandiita (little watermelon). It is believed to have been a domesticated crop before western contact began.

These plants are slow-growing when they are establishing themselves, but can eventually grow up to ten feet under proper conditions. They are drought resistant and pest-resistant relative to other cucumbers. Similar to the cucumber, these plants produce both male and female flowers. These plants can fertilize themselves, but the flowers are not self-fertile. Flowers are small and yellow, about four millimeters in diameter. Fruits develop at the base of the female flower.
