Mock strawberry Seeds, Indian Strawberry

Price for Package of 10 seeds.

Indian Strawberry (Duchesnea Indica Tuttifrutti) - Start Strawberry seeds for this rare ground cover plant that will get lots of attention! It is an Indian Strawberry plant with lovely yellow blooms, and it produces small red Strawberries all summer long on a creeping evergreen carpet. Indian Strawberry is well-suited for hanging over a wall or as a ground cover plant.
Indian Strawberry ground cover is naturalized throughout the United States, and it is found growing in shady places in woods and grassy slopes. Indian Strawberry prefers a moist, but well-drained soil in a partially sunny position.
Once Indian Strawberry plants are established, the matted root sends out runners to set new plants. Indian Strawberry leaves are light green and finely haired. Indian Strawberry flowers are small, yellow, and are 5 petaled. They first appear in April and will bloom throughout the summer until fall.
The fruit is small, about 1/2 inch round. It is edible, but many say the taste is not noteworthy. Birds, however, love the red fruit. Another common name for this variety is Mock Strawberry ground cover.

Sow Indian Strawberry seeds from January to April indoors. Use quality seed starter mix, and small pots or starter trays. Sow the Strawberry seeds on the surface and press the seed into the mix. Keep the soil damp but not wet, and protect the Indian Strawberry ground cover seeds from direct light. Seal the starter tray or pots inside a plastic bag until after germination.
When the Strawberry seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 3 inch pots, and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. After all danger of frost has passed, harden the young Mock Strawberry plant over a period of 7 - 10 days before planting outdoors in its permanent location.

WIKIPEDIA:

Duchesnea indica (Potentilla indica), known commonly as mock strawberry, Gurbir, Indian strawberry or false strawberry, has foliage and an aggregate accessory fruit similar to true strawberry, though this is apparently an independent evolution of a similar fruit type.
It has yellow flowers, unlike the white or slightly pink flowers of true strawberries. It is native to eastern and southern Asia, but has been introduced to many other areas as an ornamental plant. It has been naturalized in many regions, including the southern United States, and is considered an invasive species in some regions.
It is considered one of the most invasive plants on the island of Réunion.

The leaves are trifoliate, roughly veined beneath, dark green, and often persisting through the winter, arising from short crowns. The plant spreads along creeping stolons, rooting and producing crowns at each node.

The yellow flowers are produced in mid spring, then sporadically throughout the growing season.

The aggregate accessory fruits are white or red, and entirely covered with red achenes, simple ovaries, each containing a single seed. They are edible, but they have very little flavor. Recent genetic evidence has shown that this genus is better included within Potentilla, but currently most sources still list it in the genus Duchesnea. A poultice of the crushed leaves is used to treat skin ailments such as eczema.

Very few species are fully hardy, but once mature they can be planted out and wrapped up in sacking for winter. Some species are smaller in habit and make ideal houseplants. Musa sikkimensis is a fairly recent introduction to the UK. This striking Banana originates from Eastern India and is proving a pretty hardy species. A vigorous grower, it produces huge, tough green leaves with an attractive maroon midrib and strong, random streaks of maroon across the leaves. Mature plants (5 years +) bear long lasting yellow flowers. Although frost will not damage the roots, the leaves should be wrapped in fleece or sacking for the winter. Alternatively can be grown in a large container and moved to a frost free place over winter. All in all, an excellent addition to the subtropical border or achitectural planting scheme. Half Hardy Perennial (to 0C - wrap up in winter) Height: 3-4m Position: Sun or semi-shade preferably out of strong winds.

Bells of Ireland Seeds (Moluccella laevis)

Price for Package of 10 seeds.

Bells of Ireland are flowers to please anyone who loves flower arranging. Cut fresh, the bells will last for years and they are very useful for winter arrangements but they also look good in flower borders and with the recent fashion for green blooms are becoming more sort after.

The papery 2 to 5cm (¾ to 1¼in) bells are densely packed along most of the length of the square stems that can reach up to 90cm (3in). The white flowers are relatively small and inconspicuous but the green, bell-shaped calyx surrounding each bloom is large and showy.

The bells are as wide as your thumb and crowd their way up the entire stem. The large white seeds are produced at the bottom of the calyx, looking somewhat like chicken eggs in a nest, it is sometimes called Shell flower. Moluccella look good when combined with other colourful annual flowers in the border or cutting bed.

They also do well in containers, offering a vertical component.

The light green colour complements any white flowers or purple-leaved plants and can be used in monochromatic schemes with other green-flowered plants. They even look interesting late in the season when the old spikes become dry and bleached (if they haven't been pruned out to encourage new growth).

Moluccella has been cultivated since 1570; the flowers are a symbol of good luck. Both the flowers and rounded, pale green leaves with slightly scalloped edges have a distinctive lemon/vanilla scent.

Sowing:

Sow indoors in Spring To hasten germination, prechill the seeds for 5 days.

Place the seeds in a moistened piece of kitchen roll and place in the fridge for 5 days.

Sow seed on the surface of lightly firmed well drained seed compost in pots or trays. "Just cover" the seed with a light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite, do not exclude light as this helps germination.

Keep at a temperature at around 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F). After sowing, keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination can take between 21 to 35 days. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays and grow on.

Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10 to 15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 22 to 30cm (9 to 12in) apart.

Cultivation:

For best results site in a well drained position in full sun. The flowers take around 90 to 100 days from seed to bloom. The stems should not need staking unless the area is exposed and subject to high winds.

Cut Flowers:

This is a fast-growing border plant with unusual qualities including an ability to survive for months as a cut flower. To use for fresh arrangements, harvest the flower heads at their peak of blooming. The stems are hollow making them difficult to use with Oasis foam. Professional florists insert a wired stake into the hollow stem for use in foam.
Display in a cool, shaded area and kept supplied with fresh water, they will remain fresh for 7 to 10 days. Re-cut 12mm (½in) from the base of each Bells of Ireland stem under water using a sharp knife with each water change to extend the life of the blooms. Remove any foliage that may become submerged after re-cutting to avoid bacterial growth.
Adding a commercial floral preservative to the vase will help to prevent bacteria growth and feeds your flowers insuring a longer vase life. To make your own cut flower food, mix half a teaspoon of table sugar to a quart of cold water and mix thoroughly.
Bells of Ireland turn a lovely straw colour when dried. Harvest the flowers in dry weather at the end of the summer. Hang upside down in a dry area, making sure that there is enough ventilation between the flowers, so that they dry evenly.

Plant Uses:

Flower Arranging, Flowers Borders and Beds, Cottage / Informal Gardens. Over many years he obtained a strain of Poppies ranging in colors from white to pale lilac to pink and red, and unlike the wild Poppies these had no dark blotches at the base of the petals. Over the years, further wildflower Poppy selection has created the semi-double and double forms, as well as flowers with a ring of contrasting color around the edge called the picotee form. Easily grown from Shirley Poppy seeds, gardeners enthusiastically grow this variety for the wonderful display of diverse color and forms. How to Grow Poppies: Directly sow Poppy seeds in early spring before frosts have finished. Shirley Poppies grow best in loose soil that drains well. Press the flower seeds firmly into the soil and keep the soil moist until germination.

Flower Specifications

Season: Annual
USDA Zones: 3 - 9
Height: 12 - 15 inches
Bloom Season: Summer
Bloom Color: Mix
Environment: Full sun
Soil Type: Loose, well-drained, pH 6.1 - 7.3
Deer Resistant: Yes

Planting Directions

Temperature: 55 - 60F
Average Germ Time: 21 - 28 days
Light Required: Yes
Depth: Do not cover the seed but press into the soil
Moisture: Keep seeds moist until germination
Plant Spacing: 12 inches
