COROJO TOBACCO SEEDS

Price for Package of 50 seeds.

Corojo is a type of tobacco, primarily used in the making of wrappers for cigars. The variety was originally grown in the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba but is today grown exclusively in the Jamastran valley of Honduras and in the United States in Western Kentucky.

Black Patch Cigar Co. Founder Eric McAnallen is having the Kentucky propagated Corojo, Kenbano(TM) seed planted for the 2011/2012 Dominican harvest after successfully growing this tobacco varietal in Western Kentucky since 2007. Two different growing areas, soil "signatures" in the Cibao valley have been identified for cultivation. The two areas where the Kenbano seed is being raised are Pinuela and Navarrete. The Navarrete soil matrix mirrors the soil of Vuelta Abajo, Cuba. Historically Navarrete has been ideal for Cuban heirloom seed success in the Dominican Republic. Pinuela has similar success with a soil analysis comparable to Pinar, Cuba. These soil components produce a robust growth in leaf yield per stalk and exhibit a peppery spice in flavor.

History

Origin

Corojo was originally developed and grown by Diego Rodriguez at his farm or vega, Santa Ines del Corojo and takes its name from the farm, which was located near the town of San Luis in the province of Pinar del Rio, Cuba.Daniel Maria Rodriguez, son of Diego Rodriguez, later perfected the variety Corojo and developed the "Worlds Best Wrapper" until the Communist revolution of Fidel Castro caused the family to leave the country forever. Diego Rodriguez & Daniel Rodriguez, sons of Daniel Maria Rodriguez later grew the shade tobacoo variety in Havana, Florida and in Nicaragua. Diego Rodriguez has two sons, Diego Daniel Rodriguez and Daniel Jose Rodriguez. Daniel Rodriguez also has two sons, Daniel Antonio Rodriguez and Diego Rene Rodriguez.

Corojo was used extensively as a wrapper for many years on Cuban cigars, with the tobacco's spicy "punch" becoming a commonly associated trademark of the country's tobacco products.[1] Indeed, between the 1930s and the 1990s all Cuban cigars, regardless of brand or factory, made use of Corojo wrappers.[1] However, the variety's susceptibility to various diseases, including blue mold and black shank disease caused Cuban agronomists to search for a more hearty and reliable alternative.

Cuban genetic engineers ultimately developed various hybrid forms that would not only be disease-resistant, but would also display excellent wrapper qualities.[2] Today no pure Corojo is grown in Cuba, the last harvest taking place there during the 1996/97 agricultural year.

Use of Corojo today

Today, both hybrid and pure strains of Corojo are used in the production of cigars. Most of the pure Corojo leaf is currently grown in Honduras' Jamastran Valley, while the hybrid varieties are more widely grown and used.

See all available tobacco seeds for sale.

Cuban Criollo 98 Tobacco Seeds

Price for Package of 50 seeds.

Another very popular Cuban cigar variety. Will grow up to 6-7 ft. tall. Its leaves are longer, more slender and slightly darker than the Habano 2000. It’s cured leaves have a silky texture making it a good covering for cigars. It has a pleasant, mild aroma and taste. Used for cigars and pipes.

Cuban Criollo 98 is one of the most valued strains for Cuban cigars. It originated from a crossing between the varieties ' Havana 92' and `Habana P.R'. Cultivated in the sun it produces from 14 to 16 useful leaves per plant and makes an excellent binder. Leaves average 24 inches in length and 12 inches wide. It is resistant to the Blue Mold, the Blackish Paw, and the Tobacco Mosaic Virus and moderately resistant to the Environmental Necrosis. Specially bred for use in cigar wrappers.

Soil Selection

Tobacco should be grown in a sunny location on well-drained soils. Poorly drained soils could result in poor growth and even death of the plants. Tobacco can be grown on poorly-drained soils if the rows or hills are bedded and ditches or furrows are used to remove excess water. Drought stress could limit growth on excessively drained soils unless irrigation is provided. Lack of sun will result in spindly plants, poor growth and thin leaves. Some types of tobacco such as that used for cigar wrappers are grown under some shade to promote desirable leaf characteristics.

Avoid planting tobacco on soil infested with nematodes and diseases. Grasses would be excellent rotations for tobacco, while tomato, pepper, and similar plants would not be suitable. In addition to soil-borne pests, several virus diseases and insects that attack tomato and pepper also attack tobacco, so try to keep these plants in different areas of the garden.

Soil pH should be about 5.8 for best growth of tobacco. If lime is needed to raise the pH, use dolomite in order to get the magnesium nutrient which is important for plant growth. Poor growth and some growth disorders may occur if the soil pH is about 6.5 or more.

Since tobacco seed are very small (300,000 or more per ounce), they should be sown in a greenhouse or in a protected area. The soil should be free of weed seed and disease organisms. A flower pot would be a satisfactory container if only a few transplants will be needed. Sprinkle the seed on the soil surface, then firm the soil surface to insure good seed to soil contact. Irrigate with a very fine spray, or add water to a saucer under the flower pot. Add water as often as necessary to keep the soil surface moist, but avoid excessive water.

Small amounts of fertilizer will be needed to produce the transplants. A tobacco fertilizer should contain little or no chlorine and most of the nitrogen should be in the nitrate form. Fertilizer manufactured for use on tomato, pepper, and potato should be satisfactory for tobacco.

Seed should be sown about 50-60 days prior to the desired date of transplanting. Transplanting should be after there is no further danger of freezing temperatures. Normally the best transplant is about 6-8 inches in length.

They are somewhat similar to Burleys but have a more distinct flavor of their own. And they also have a characteristic growth habit and generally have a more pyramidal shape with large and more pointed leaves. The big cigarette companies don't tell anyone what they put in their blends exactly, but Marlboro and Winston brands taste like they are a Bright Leaf and Maryland blend, instead of Bright Leaf & Burley. Many people like Marylands in a pipe and also as a cigar filler.

Burley Tobacco Seeds cocoa like aroma

Price for Package of 50 or 500 seeds.

Burley tobacco is a light air-cured tobacco used primarily for cigarette production. In the United States it is produced in an eight-state belt with approximately 70% produced in Kentucky. Tennessee produces approximately 20%, with smaller amounts produced in Indiana, North Carolina, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. Burley tobacco is produced in many other countries, with major production in Brazil, Malawi and Argentina.

History

The origin of White Burley tobacco was credited to a Mr. Webb in 1864, who grew it near Higginsport, Ohio, from seed from Bracken County, Kentucky. He noticed it yielded a different type of light leaf shaded from white to yellow, and cured differently. By 1866, he harvested 20,000 pounds of Burley tobacco and sold it in 1867 at the St. Louis Fair for $58 per hundred pounds. By 1883, the principal market for this tobacco was Cincinnati, but it was grown throughout central Kentucky and Middle Tennessee. In 1880 Kentucky produced 36 percent of the total national tobacco production, and was first in the country, with nearly twice as much tobacco produced as by Virginia, then the second-place state.[1] Later the type became referred to as burley tobacco, which is air-cured.

In the U.S., burley tobacco plants are started from pelletized seeds placed in polystyrene trays floated on a bed of fertilized water in March or April. Transplanting begins in May and progresses through June with a small percentage set in July. Producers must contend with major diseases such as black shank and blue mold and insects like aphids, hornworms and budworms. Plants are topped by removing the developing flower head at approximately 60 days from transplanting, and treated to prevent the growth of side shoots called suckers. Topping allows energy that would have produced a bloom to promote leaf expansion. At approximately four weeks after topping, the tobacco is stalk cut, using a knife that is shaped like a tomahawk. Each plant is speared, spiked or spudded (the terminology depending on the geographic location) onto a stick topped by a metal spear, spike or spud that fits over the stick. Each stick will contain five or six stalks.

Sticks of green-cut tobacco are most often allowed to field wilt for three or four days prior to hanging in a barn. Tobacco is allowed to air cure for eight or more weeks, turning from the normal pale green to yellow and then to brown. Burley that cures too quickly will retain some of the yellow pigments, as well as chemicals that normally break down with a slower cure. The quality achieved by U.S. burley producers is primarily due to natural curing conditions. Once fully cured burley is taken down, sticks are removed and leaves are stripped from the plant into grades by stalk position. Leaves are baled by grade and taken to a receiving station run by a tobacco manufacturer or leaf dealer.

Sowing:

Seeds should be surface sown in fertile, well-draining loam in full sun. The soil should be deeply tilled. They are best off being direct sown after any danger of frost or sown in trofts outside and transplanted to the ground when about two inches tall. They can also be started indoors for an early start. This also helps prevent them from being carried away by the wind or water. Tabacum is considered a perennial in warmer climates, but can be grown elsewhere as an annual. Thin plants to about two feet apart, and cut off the flowering tops to increase leaf size. Flowering requires 14 hours of daylight to begin. Remove dead flowers to encourage new ones to emerge.
Samsoun Orient Tobacco Seeds

Price for Package of 50 seeds.

The Samsoun Turkish tobaccos are among the best Oriental tobaccos out there. This variety of tobacco with - higher nicotine content now used to a greater shisha tobacco, and as an aromatic ingredient of cigarettes and pipe tobacco fine cut that slows especially the too rapid burning of Virginia tobaccos - compared to other Oriental tobaccos. The leaves are rich in essential oils, which are responsible for their own flavor and slow burn, and the neon and combustibility of tobacco is ideal.

Plant: The leaves are medium sized, thin and wavy, supple and from yellow-brown-reddish color, slightly darker than other oriental tobaccos. The plant achieved by the source on nutrient-poor soils at an altitude of 100-150 cm, is so much tall as Virginia or DLT varieties.

Taste: Rich, sweet, filling and fresh.

Extras: The leaf is rich in fatty substances and for a relatively nikotinhaltig oriental tobacco.

Aroma: Pleasant, but not by much, it works in cigarette blends balancing and harmonizing.

General tips for Oriental tobaccos:

All Oriental tobaccos are suitable for water pipes and cigarettes are among the best fine cut and pipe tobaccos, which thrive in this world. One of the reasons is the relative short stature: In the small leaves concentrate aromatic oils, resins and other active substances for the highly aromatic flavor, the slow burn and is responsible for the mild sweetness of the smoke flavor. Therefore, they grow particularly well on poor soils, in mountainous and high slopes. Commercially they are hard to find: Oriental tobaccos are very expensive, as is harvested by hand. They are absent in almost any pipe or cigarette blend, in which they are usually mixed as Würztabak and to slow the rapid erosion of VIRGINIA.
